Moshito 05 - update… Muso’s tune in!

Submitted by SJ on August 1, 2005 – 12:49 pm109 Comments

Sounds like Moshito kicked off on a positive note with the first day’s plenary session celebrating the growing musical economy in SA and looking at how to tackle segmentation and piracy within the local industry so that we can have maximum growth in the future.

Moshito music conference opens to tackle growth

After months of preparation, the Moshito ‘05 Music Con…
ference and Exhibition opened its doors yesterday to over 500 delegates representing South Africa’s music business interests. The first day of the conference was a full schedule of plenary addresses from industry experts around the globe.

An enthusiastic welcome was provided by Nick Motsatse, Moshito Chairperson, who painted a broad and very holistic picture of the music industry landscape in South Africa today. He alluded to the role of both local and national government, the rise of technology and the need to adapt to thriving domestic consumer demand.

Reiterating the key reasons for the formation of Moshito under the auspices of the South Africa Music Industry Cooperation Initiative (SAMICI), Motsatse said that music is has been an underperforming sector that suffers from fragmentation, there need for common vision and this is the role Moshito must play.

“The South African economy is doing well, and the music industry needs to take advantage. We are at a cross-road with declining music sales of recorded music product world-wide, yet increased music consumption. The local music business has to react.”

International guest Iain Grant, Worldwide Head of Enforcement for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), gave delegates a view of music piracy and the scale at which it exists. Piracy is global problem requiring a global response, and that is the role of the IFPI, who partner with local organisations like the Recording Industry of South Africa
(RISA) to conduct raids and gather intelligence. He highlighted Africa’s position within a global annual piracy market of $4.5billion, where South Africa’ piracy rate of 40% is low compared to other African states.

The primary problem faced is that piracy is a relatively low-risk, high profit criminal operation with a lack of legislation and effective prosecution. In addition, it has been established that dealing in counterfeit goods is a major funding mechanism of international terrorist
organizations and drug cartels.

  • midi trust says:

there are plenty of workshops, skills awareness programmes available for musicians dealing with music business issues, however the midi trust finds it so so very convenient to make these available to areas in black townships, centres of inconvenience, and difficulty in travel for peoples other than black, white or coloured, oh no they will not have these courses in city centres where everybody could attend.

  • past says:

the sa music awards in a nutshell is a joke, a like to keep in line with ubuntu, by seriously uplifting one racial group that is black, whilst still harping ,ranting, raving, and getting pumped up on all the horrors of the past, poor black people, uneducated, disadvantaged, colonialism, apartheid, come on get a life man

  • sa says:

the department of arts and culture must reflect all races in its management structures, and be transparent to the people, legislation is also necessary to ensure all races are cated for equally in its expenditure ,buget, agendas

  • really mad says:

black racism nor will zionist domination ( or to control the music world - with jewish musicians dominating in all genres -worldwide) will stop us indians even making that small input into the industry. the zionists have come from a painful past,so i hope they do not exercise that pain on us indian musicians. we indians offer our friendship to the zionists(stubbon as they are),and hope they respond in kind,an open door of opportunity to learn ,forge friendships, and open up the avenues of doubt ,pain prejudice and heal the past ,with sincere intentions not hidden agendas,(we can play the same game too),or use the other races to give us indians pain. lets start with a clean slate.

  • race thing says:

the kora awards soon to take place, lots of hype, noise, fumigation, invasion by african americans, cloak and dagger stuff going on,racial noise, and how everybody is stealing into black music, culture, lifestyle., music is a black thing and will last forever, god has blessed the black people with abundance of music, which is now being used as a racial weapon against the world, black churches are filled with the gospel spirit(nothing like it in the world),exert pressure to take over the music industry, come on man we are not children.

  • mad swine says:

rejection is no stranger to us indian musicians, in fact it is a way of life when dealing with the media- radio station and its nerds, or the music industry as a whole ,the zionists, the hardcore blacks and colourds whom all believe we have no place at all in the media-entertainment industry. the most painful thing of it all is that the very same people and organisations that will be attending moshito 2006, the likes of rosie katz, chales kuhn ,dennis east etc, will be spewing the same old shit, coupled with emphatic lies, excuses, denials etc the stuff we got used to for decades.

  • you be the judge says:

rock music and rock music be it rock\pop, rock\jazz,punk \rock etc, was accepted worldwide, then came along the christian ministry and ridiculed, vilified, condemned, banned, and openly declared rock music in all its forms, branded ” THE DEVILS MUSIC”, well the church grew, and the ministry was happy, so they thought, well if anyone now listen to the lyrics, and the rubbish played on the radio, mtv, media, internet, discos, clubs, etc where drugs are rife, women denegrated, sex orgies are a norm, break down of society and family values etc, ” SATAN CERTAINLY WON THE BATTLE AGAINST THESE THICK HEADED CHRISTIANS WHOM SPEAK OR REPRESENT SOCIETY”, makes you think that no christian minister stands outside an liquor plant telling them that liquor destroys society, oh no christianity is a thriving business churning outb billions yearly.

  • aliens says:

moshito 2006 holds the key ,will it live up to expectations or will it fail miserably,? will the indie labels be free to operate without fear, hinderance or pressure?,will the mainstream industry abandon their black market- racial dominance, holy than thou approach-zebra culture approach and thinking?, will nick motsatse be bold enough to speak his mind or will he hide behind the skirts of racists politicians, musicians, divas etc? well we are all watching .

  • south indians says:

respect and appreciation must be given to the jews, for their talents ,contribution to the world, society, mankind is without doubt outstanding, the jews of the world in a nutshell are without doubt ” MAGICAL METAMORPHOSIS”, EINSTEINS, and that is huge respect and compliment from a south indian musician, composer, and the jews will despite their trials and tribulations, hardships, pain and suffering, will always come out winners and smiling and that is a fact.

  • race thing says:

indians generally get the feeling that some people of importance within the music industry deliberately does not want to share industry information, such as music business workshops, indie label-business promotion etc, and are quite happy to make this information readily available to empower blacks(as in native black -blacks, nobody else is black in this catageory), and also working hand in glove with black radio stations such as metro fm., so can we indians honestly trust the intentions or words of some moshito officials.

  • realist-another south indian muso says:

i hope south indian musician also expresses pity, sympathy, and one-ness with the pain ,plight, and suffering of the palestinian peoples under zionist oppression.

  • wake up says:

the aryans are only interested in the return of the nazi party, and the northern indians(hindustanis),the afrikaners, along with the germans, and others worldwide incl mexicans, persians, etc are all contributing to the chaos and madness to assist the aryan cause, ever wondered why there is north-south conflicts in areas of the world,or whereever there is conflicts, two types of peoples are involved, maybe ask the bilderbergs. the aryans vs the free world, tomorrows war.

  • rainbow nation says:

i hope the honourable south african state president would intervene in the music industry and really make effective realistic, tangible changes to the music industry to make it more accomodating to the wider south african music public and varied musicians of colour, so as to make good on a promise of a rainbow nation and honour all those respected comrades that fought so hard for the freedoms that we so cherish, people should not be punished or ridicules or discriminated against because they are not CHRISTIANS,it is not a crime to belong to another religion, god loves all his creations.

  • come on says:

yes the honourable south african state president must start firstly with the department of arts and culture ,the media and the music industry as a whole, which is the biggest nightmare ,pain and obstacle to indian, oriental and other disadvantaged musicians.the dept of atrts and culture is in a state of war against indian musicians.

  • uncle sam says:

moshito is a failure,so would any other(so-called) creative ventures, the state president must intervene as a priority,we get the impression that some members of the dept of arts and culture are actually celebrationg the fact that indians are excluded from all social activities and national festivals, promotions, concerts, etc.

  • life says:

music in all genres has its moment in time, it shines, and then a passing phase, although not in all cases, but that is the norm, a way of life of the music industry, we indians have to note this very carefully, for like some whom have indie labels and seek distribution deals from the major record companies, we are told to send our material to the a&r department of the record label, of course it disappears and we awaitl(ike fools fed with lies and deceit) to no avail, that is the life in the music industry where afrikaners working within the industry are making pretty sure all obstacles are firmly in place and that lfe will be made extremely difficult for any indian musician.and their music.

  • mr president says:

racism is alive well and thriving within the dept of arts and culture, only a fool would believe otherwise, and politics playing a key role in it all, we appeal to the state president to intervene to make this department truly reflective of the new south africa.

  • mad man says:

well getting the state president involved in the music ,arts and culture is a noble thing, and rightly so, but remember that there are very influencial figures with their own agendas for the industry, and markets and numbers will dictate ,also there is a cristian crusade to ban all non christians from the music industry, my advice to them is to respect god and not use the name of aholy and divine being for materialistic gain, or jump up and down like hysterical idiots to prove the point.

  • indian says:

as 2006 dawns upon us,much has been expressed in this forum, the views frustrations and little anger judging from the views expressed, some people ,artists,or groups etc(springbok nude girls, freshly ground, arno carstens- busy rallying the stormtroopers)etc one might say why dont these indians use their frustrations to create or compose songs, well we indians are totally useless at lyrics, creating hit songs, or even organising a shoecase,so you lot could educate us cause for decades we have been howling and whining, and trying to do exactly that. well cheers all happy new year 2006, best of luck

  • had to say it says:

we indians simply cannot match the work of the first world ayran volk, simply because they are in par with the disipline and determination and mind set of the german soldiers incl waffen ss during world war 2.

  • new south africa says:

the south african human rights commission in all fairness ,should be monitoring the african american entertainment community in its influences on the local south african entertainment industry ,music arts, in particular black comedians (for excesses , and which is tantamount to racial slurs),also racial indoctrination.

  • observer says:

a lot of strange things must be happening in all those african american churches in america, when black south african artists, gospel groups etc go over they return psychologically transformed, with an attitude, filled with rage, has those churches become indoctrination centres, also black comedians, poets, etc must surely be monitored, some are really going overboard in their racial thing.

  • kyk weer says:

in his quest to rally the troopers, arno carstens could do with some help from his hauptmann and ss officer steve hofmeyer, or the ss officers from afrikaans rock .

  • failed indian says:

not only can we indians not write proper lyrics, we cannot produce music, hit songs, arrange music works, market,or overall music and film productionsd, well we are right at the bottom of the heap ,the record companies will definately set us indians up for failure .

  • dream on says:

the music industry and all concerned ,do now have a slight insight into the plight of indian musicians, their thoughts, concerns, negative and critical points of views, a somewhat fair idea of the expectations, wants, fears that confront us indian musicians, and moshito , the respected state president, music industry ,dept of arts and culture, sponsors etc, all concerned should now seize the initiative,to make bold tangible changes that are visible at grassroots level,or else it will send out the wrong signals should this moment of opportunity vanish, and all else seems a vishful dream.

  • dream on says:

the music industry and all concerned ,do now have a slight insight into the plight of indian musicians, their thoughts, concerns, negative and critical points of views, a somewhat fair idea of the expectations, wants, fears that confront us indian musicians, and moshito , the respected state president, music industry ,dept of arts and culture, sponsors etc, all concerned should now seize the initiative,to make bold tangible changes that are visible at grassroots level,or else it will send out the wrong signals should this moment of opportunity vanish, and all else seems a vishful dream.,so no excuses now.

  • indian listerner says:

in the late 60s’ till the early 80s’ ,we hade some of the worlds best english disc jockeys coming through the ranks of radio 5, springbok radio, lm radio, the likes of davis gresham, alex jay, anne williams, kevin savage, barney simon ,etc the list is endless ,each making their mark in history and educating south african audiences. they certainly don’t make them like that anymore what a pity.

  • sad note says:

the african american entertainment community ,churches are very influencial here in south africa, they certainly, have got the local blacks in their pockets, taking over their minds. notice how our local blacks artists, poets, comedians etc handle the media, cool, calm, thickheaded, arragont, overbearing, provoking and intimidating the interviewer, playing racial games, getting everyone around them (that is not black) nervious and irritating, and making errors in judgement. well what did the comrades in the anc fight for a zebra cultured society, preaching democracy but practicing black racism (pulling wool over our eyes),well history will judge us all.

  • afro-blues says:

yes sad note is right, the african american blacks have taught our locals well, they taught them so well that we non-blacks could get an education on black racism, hidden agendas, behaviour patterns, and generally how to tacke irritating people with dubious, sinister, motivated and racial intentions.they taught them well how to make life difficult for others being non-black.

  • alto says:

well you know what they say “what goes around, comes around”, i hope they realise this.

  • kwaito says:

i suppose the local blacks are saying ,we dont have to take note of anything these cool-guys are saying,we blacks are in power, and we do as we please, and the music industry is now and will be forever in black control.we take no shit from no-one.

  • mob rules says:

you cannot blame them for thinking like that b.e.e is here forever,(black economic empowerment), black takeover.

  • black and white says:

i believe the entire draft policy pertaining to arts and culture in all its facets should undergo a total transformation, expansion, in south africa.so must policy governing the media,in particular radio and television, to embrace ,include, involve, explore avenues of involving all races ,and not excluding any minority races.also information by way of booklets,cd-roms,dvds,(with a price tag-sponsored by the dept of arts and culture) and available on the internet(locally) furnishing relevant details on how the music industry operates,job-opportunities,and relevant details for the unemployed musicians, whom could interact with others, use those skills to start their own record labels, etc, this is vital(incl all relevant players in the industry)

  • say it says:

afro blues is right blacks have mastered the art of racially irritating the other races ,you see it on tv or even on radio ,catching people off guard then pulling the rug from under them leaving them speechless, cold, stupid and weak.

  • bad says:

not all indians think like afro black, there are so many black people ,honourable people that i would be proud to associate myself with and get an education from, remember there are good and bad in all races ,lots of rotten indians i myself would keep far away from.

  • stupid says:

yeah man black is beautiful, get on with it,open up your mind.

  • south indians says:

respect and appreciation must go out to all those whom served at radio 5, lm radio etc, from the sixties up until the mid-eighties,despite the dark days of apartheid,we did have friends that made life much more beautiful and meaningful, bringing to us the joy of music, contrary to the poison of apartheid(that made life hell on earth for all). despite the pressures of the apartheid government and harassment of liberal radio stations, these respected heroes(everyone of them- incl david gresham) still managed to function from all that hell and sanctions risking all to bring the south african public world class music. i think i can speak for all south indian musicians when i say we salute all those great pioneers and heroes ,and as the group abba would say it “thank you for the music”,keep your feet on the ground and reach for the stars.

  • future says:

indians will certainly go through hell in this industry, the deep end of it all, expect no mercy, expect the worst of ridicule and critique, rejection by crowds and industry people alike, man it will be a nightmare for us.

  • wake up says:

i hope moshito 2006 will not be just another sunday school church service where this or that will or wont be on the councils agenda, whilst everybody sits down to chat ,cup of tea,and consume the goodies on offering, twiddling their thumbs doing things african time. we indians do not have the luxury of time ,everything should have been done yesterday.

  • zebra says:

it is high time to end the johannesburg cultural imperalism of the music and arts scene, every province must now have its opportunity.

  • indo man says:

there should be no excuse for moshito not to include many important views in this forum,if they (moshito) are really serious about making historic changes ,they can go the extra mile to extend moshito for even an extra month, extra week, to satisfy all parties, provided, they walk the talk.

  • last say says:

if moshito is really serious to address issues then they should not place restrictions in its agendas and content, or otherwise it might give the impression that it is not serious or capable of tackling issues of concern., or that its leader and panel are not capable of tackling issues.

  • new sa says:

unisco- the diversity policy, and a unisco official must be included, and presence felt at moshito 2006,also attendance and time keeping of moshito officials upheld.(provisions also must be made to accomodate minority south indian, jewish, greek, italian, chinese, japanese, portuguese etc communities into the fold of the music, arts, theatre, and entertainment communities with visible preseence.)

  • max says:

an open door policy will only work if it is visible ,has merits, felt at ground level, reaches out to those sidlined in favour of the massive assault on the arts, music, entertainment by both blacks and whites, not saddled up by dragging or stalling up issues and solutions

  • sa says:

unisco- the policy is a start and guide for moshito, and must be followed up- upon, use it wisely moshito and make history in south africa.

  • zebra apartheid says:

the various dis-advantaged communities that are suffering from the new zebra(black and white) apartheid in south africa ie: south indians, jews, greeks, lebanese, chinese, japanese, italian,
portuguese etc, must now be given their rightful place in the sunlight, and a policy document to stipulate that these communities will be cated for in the budgets of the dept of arts and culture, be treated equally as south african citizens, given equal opportunities in all facets of the arts, music and culture, given attention by the media, and coverages of their events, not discriminated against, and allocated a special task force to monitor any form of disregards and violations to any agreements.

  • zebra says:

yes i agree with the above writer, checks and balances,as well as clauses put in place to ensure compliances that would cater for all the above mentioned dis-advantaged communities suffering from discrimination in the new zebra-apartheid south africa .the media also must be signature to this draft document which must fall in line with the unisco diversity policy. the media must also air local concerts especially in the visual medium such as s.a.b.c

  • aliens says:

one needs things(agreements) in black and white ,given the racist culture in the media esp the visual medium and all the racists - negative comments and rage coming from blacks within the sports departments of the national broadcaster when egypt won the africa cup of nations. racism both black and white is alive, well ,and thriving within the media.

  • indian says:

all agreements reached must be copmrehensive, broadbased, and inclusive of all the dis-advantaged groupes mentioned above in a draft document to be submitted to parliment protecting all their rights and protection from exploitation and racists practices. also laws ensuring no political interferences in the media and entertainment industry policy documents also submitted to parliament for approval.

  • rhino says:

never in my life have i seen such wallowing in self-pity. people listen with their wallets and the muso industry is coulour blind, if you’re good, you go to the top, if not you sink - stink.

    get over your self-pity
